Blog #5

 I have learned a lot about conducting research over the course of this class. The many different aspects and processes that go into crafting a well-put-together proposal are all so important, and I've found it really interesting learning about them. Research as a whole is not my favorite thing to do, but this class has taught me that it can be really enjoyable if what I'm researching is something I'm passionate about. It has been wonderful applying my own personality and passion into my work and I think that that has made the work I have completed better quality than it would have been otherwise. I think if I can find spaces like this in the future where I can use the skills I've gathered as a technical communicator and use them in a way that I find fulfilling and not boring or irrelevant to me, that I will have an excellent time furthering my craft and finding a place for myself in this field.

    I really like your response here. I could tell how passionate you were about your project all semester and I think you bring a fresh perspective to technical communication. I know that you responded to my blog posts once or twice and the guidance you provided was always welcomed and helpful. Your topic is very intriguing and I'm sure will be a great addition to the field as social media becomes more and more prevalent. Thanks for all of your insights this semester. I look forward to watching you present on your topic!

Blog Post #2: Research topic with Tentative 10 Sources

 The topic of my research is the efficacy of the app Instagram as a vehicle for book reviews on the sales and successes of books, particularly those independently published. There is not much research on this specific topic that has already been done, so I have focused the majority of my research on the importance of book reviews in book sales, and on social media as a marketing tool. Blog Post #1: Topics of Interest

       A topic of interest that I think would make very interesting research would be book reviews and their effectiveness, specifically through the medium of Instagram. There is a whole community of individuals who build their entire social media platforms around the review and promotion of books, and I have been involved in this for almost two years now. Instagram has become a place for both readers and authors to come together and engage with one another, and for many people, to discuss what they are reading with others and potentially find new books. I would be very interested in connecting with the authors who send their books to reviewers and promote them online, the reviewers that post about them, and the readers who may or may not be influenced to but/read them, to gauge the effectiveness of this tool in increasing book sales and helping readers find new books they might not have come across otherwise.

Blog Post #3: Research Gap

      Essentially, my entire research topic is a giant research gap. My research project is on the impact of Instagram book reviews on the sales of indie-published books. There is zero research that currently exists that addresses that question. Thus far, all of my research has been peripheral to this topic. I have focused on the importance of book reviews on sales, the use of social media as a marketing tool, and the particular challenges of publishing a book independently. All of these topics together will help to inform my research, but it is hard going into it with no foundation in this topic.
